El Hijo del Vikingo retains the AAA Mega Championship at Triplemanía XXXIII

Lucha Libre AAA celebrated last night Triplemanía XXXIII, one of its biggest events of the year, which this time featured numerous WWE talents, with three of them competing in the main event of the night for the AAA Megachampionship. A match that ended with El Hijo del Vikingo's victory over Dominik Mysterio, Dragon Lee, and El Grande Americano to retain the company's top title.

Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano joined forces against their rivals, leading them to forge a brief alliance to get rid of the heels. The action didn't give a second of respite, with all participants exchanging control phases. Dominik decided to end his alliance with El Grande Americano. As a result, both ended up falling into the clutches of Lee and El Hijo del Vikingo, who simultaneously applied a running meteora on the heels.

After an intense phase full of finishers and nearfalls, El Grande Americano and Mysterio decided to join forces once again to execute a double powerbomb on El Hijo del Vikingo onto the English commentary table, which ended up shattered. Meanwhile, Lee launched himself against the heels with a tremendous suicide dive.

At that moment, chaos took over the match. Finn Bálor and JD McDonnagh appeared on the scene to help Mysterio, but LWO (Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro) quickly came to Lee's rescue, launching an attack on the members of Judgment Day. At that moment, two Grandes Americanos stormed ringside to hand a metal plate to their partner, but before he could use it, Dragon knocked him out with a superkick.

The plate ended up in Dom's hands, who introduced it under the mask he wore. After expelling El Hijo del Vikingo from the ring, Mysterio headbutted El Grande Americano, who fell unconscious on the canvas. A second headbutt brought down Lee, whom Dom finished off with a frog splash. Victory seemed assured, but a masked wrestler pulled the referee out of the ring, interrupting the count of three.

The masked wrestler attacked Dom before revealing his identity: AJ Styles. "The Phenomenal One" trapped Dominik to apply a Styles Clash. After that, he went in search of the referee to bring him back. Meanwhile, El Hijo del Vikingo sought height to finish off Mysterio with a 630 senton that sealed his victory.

Thus, El Hijo del Vikingo adds his third title defense in his second reign as AAA Megachampion, which now totals 78 days. Vikingo defeated Alberto El Patrón at the Alliances event last May to win his second world title in the company.

A bittersweet victory

It is worth noting that El Hijo del Vikingo was booed all night. Despite playing a face character, AAA fans have turned their backs on him to openly support Alberto El Patrón, who may not return to the company after it was bought by WWE. Last night, the audience wanted to make their position clear, as seen in the final minutes of the event, with El Hijo del Vikingo raising the championship amidst a loud chorus of boos. It remains to be seen if WWE will make a decision regarding this.
