The wrestling world was shocked when John Cena betrayed Cody Rhodes at Elimination Chamber, aligning himself with The Rock and Travis Scott in one of the most unexpected closures in recent times. However, Cena himself acknowledges that the move didn't go as planned.
During his appearance at Fan Expo Chicago, in an interview for Pop Verse, Cena talked about the lukewarm reception he received weeks later on RAW, when he tried to justify his change. Fans in Belgium weren't prepared to boo their childhood hero, and the reaction was more confusing than impactful.
The 16-time world champion was straightforward about what happened: "It didn't bother me. I failed. And that's okay. You can learn from failure, right? I went up there and crashed. That's life."
Cena explained that the intention was to create a shocking TV moment, but the plan fell apart when The Rock never returned to continue the story. The result was Cena trying to salvage a directionless narrative, until he walked away from the storyline before SummerSlam.
Now that he has lost the WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes and his character is back to normal, Cena looks to the future. He is scheduled to face Logan Paul at WWE Clash in Paris, the next premium WWE event set to take place on December 31st in the French capital.
