On Wednesday at Dynamite, Brodido faced FTR in the final of the tag team elimination tournament to determine which team would challenge The Hurt Syndicate at the Forbidden Door event. After a great match, the bout ended in a draw, as there was no fall in the 30 minutes in which it was stipulated to take place.
To make up for it, the decision made by Tony Khan was the simplest: both teams would become challengers for the titles. Therefore, it was officially announced that at the CMLL, AEW, and NJPW event, Bobby Lahsley and Shelton Bnejamin would defend their titles against the two teams. However, in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has confirmed that this was not the original plan that AEW had for their titles leading up to Forbidden Door.
According to the journalist, the original idea was for Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler, FTR, to win the titles directly from The Hurt Syndicate. No date is specified, but it is revealed that the faction of Lashley, Benjamin, and MVP flat out refused to lose to FTR. That's why the company found a way in the triple threat to give the championships to Dax and Cash.
According to the information, the original plan was to have them win individually against Hurt Syndicate, and then defend the titles at All Out on September 20 against Christian Cage and Adam Copeland in Toronto, Canada. This reinforces the idea that this Saturday we will have new Tag Team Champions.
This new information from Meltzer reinforces the details provided by Fighful a couple of weeks ago. According to the report, there were creative proposals to give the titles to FTR at All In, something that The Hurt Syndicate rejected. Additionally, it was reported that MVP also refused to have his men lose the titles to Jetspeed, the duo of Kevin Knight and Mike Bailey, with whom he reportedly had a very poor relationship. These accusations only serve to damage the group's image.
