The former cruiserweight champion Enzo Amore revealed this week that WWE had plans for him to star in a storyline with Conor McGregor, which could have even led to a match at WrestleMania. Although it never materialized, the idea shows that the company was close to trying to bring the UFC's most famous octagon to the WWE ring.
In a conversation with Julian Dorey, Amore explained that it was Vince McMahon himself who sent him to the McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather fight in 2017, with the intention of starting to build the angle. At that time, Amore was the cruiserweight champion and was about to break up his team with Big Cass. According to him, the plan was to turn him into a loudmouth heel who would provoke McGregor on social media.
Vince sent me to the McGregor vs. Mayweather fight because he wanted me to start tweeting to provoke him. He said, 'We want McGregor for WrestleMania'. Big Cass saw it with me, because otherwise people wouldn't even believe me.
The former WWE wrestler added that the character they had proposed to him fit perfectly into a rivalry with McGregor: a villain who talks a lot but runs away when it's time for action. However, the plan was scrapped and never made it to television.
Conor McGregor is no stranger to the WWE universe. The Irishman has had verbal confrontations on social media with figures like Paul Heyman and Roman Reigns, even going as far as proposing to fight at SummerSlam 2023. Although the idea never materialized, Enzo Amore's testimony confirms that WWE was very close to trying to sign the former UFC champion for a dream match at the biggest event of the year.
