The WWE Hall of Fame member Diamond Dallas Page has finally clarified the rumors that have been circulating for years about Randy Orton and the use of the Diamond Cutter, a move he popularized in WCW and that evolved over the years into the RKO.
In a conversation with Going Ringside, DDP confessed that it was he himself who encouraged Orton to use the maneuver and even gave him his blessing in person, although "The Viper" did not remember the conversation at that time.
"The conversation started when I called him and told him I wanted him to use it," he recounted. "Now I understand why Randy didn't remember: he had just come out of a shoulder operation the day I called him. He was high, on medication and all that."
Years later, DDP reminded him of the issue face to face. "I said to him: 'Randy, don't you remember when I called you?' And he replied: 'Oh Diamond, I was in the middle of shoulder surgery. If you say it happened, I believe you'."
Far from being upset, DDP highlighted how Orton was able to give a fresh twist to the move. "People ask me: 'What do you think about Randy stealing the Diamond Cutter from you?' What are you talking about? He reinvented it. He did it in ways that I could never have done." The admiration for reinventing moves did not end with Orton.
During his most successful period in WCW, DDP received an unexpected call from Jake "The Snake" Roberts, a ring legend and creator of the famous DDT. "Jake called me out of the blue and said: 'Congratulations'. I replied: 'Why?' And he said: 'For reinventing the DDT'".
