AJ Styles renewed with WWE at the beginning of this year, putting an end to speculations about a possible departure from the company. However, in the last few hours, it has been revealed that before signing his new contract, the veteran wrestler explored options outside of WWE.

According to Jon Alba's report for Sports Illustrated, several sources assured The Takedown that, before extending his agreement with WWE, Styles tested possible alternatives. Promoters from the convention circuit showed great interest in having him, and apparently there were preliminary conversations in which both parties were receptive.

AJ Styles' current contract expires in February 2026, just after the Royal Rumble and in the midst of WrestleMania 41. A context that could mark the final stretch of his career in the ring.

It is not the first time Styles has looked elsewhere. In 2019, he acknowledged having talks with The Young Bucks about joining AEW, although those conversations never reached the point of discussing money. Ultimately, he decided to stay in WWE, signing a contract that he once stated would be the last of his career.

Although he remains committed to the company, the fact that he explored other options demonstrates how valuable he continues to be in the world of wrestling. However, despite that value, WWE has not quite given him what he wants in terms of booking. Last Monday, during the recordings of Monday Night Raw from Paris, Styles lost to Dominik Mysterio, a result that did not sit well with the fans.
