In the last few days, the name of Ronda Rousey has once again been on the lips of many people after quite some time. After her departure from WWE in 2023 (just over a year after her rehiring), the fighter took advantage of a new interview to talk about the tense relationship she had with WWE executives during her time as a wrestler.
In this case, Rousey appeared on the podcast The Lapsed Fan to criticize the rivalry she had with Alexa Bliss for the Raw Women's Championship in the summer of 2018. Ronda was very unhappy with the decision to involve them in a rivalry, going as far as to describe it as "stupidity." "The fact that they had me fight against Alexa Bliss was a f***ing joke. And do you want to know why they had me face Alexa Bliss? Because she was the one selling the most merchandise at that time... What the h*** is that? Is that their decision-making process?", she commented.
In the last few hours, WWE Hall of Famer JBL has responded to the controversial comments made by the former WWE and UFC Champion. On the podcast Something to Wrestle, Bradshaw stated the following: "I think it's just naivety, that's what it is. Like MJF said, it's just not understanding the business. She got lucky, caught lightning in a bottle, and good for her. But clearly she doesn't understand how this works."
To support that statement, the former Undisputed WWE Champion argued that someone who knows how the world of wrestling works would have also chosen to face the two women who were probably the most popular at the time: "Who do you want to fight? Someone who doesn't sell a t-shirt? Or the person who sells the most merchandise? I don't care who it is. If that guy sells more than anyone, put me in the ring with him; we'll make money. I guarantee it will be better than fighting someone who, yes, can fight well, but no one cares about. I think it's just naivety. And it's nothing personal against her. It's just that she comes from a world where everything is meritocratic and she thinks she should just face the next in line."
Furthermore, he compared Rousey to the legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather: "And I get it, but that's the difference between guys like the Paul brothers, or Conor McGregor, or Floyd Mayweather, who are not only great fighters but also great sellers, and that's why they make so much money."
Setting money aside, JBL also highlighted that Rousey's attitude towards a coworker was terrible, something that doesn't reflect well on her. "I think it makes no sense to shame someone like Alexa, who is still making a living. You attack her and try to discredit her just to get a few clicks. I don't like that. She is a professional," he explained.
In recent years, Ronda Rousey has taken advantage of various interviews to make it clear that her view of wrestling, and WWE in particular, is more than negative, even going as far as to define wrestling as "a spectacle of minimal effort".
