Ilja Dragunov has been out of action for a year after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in a match against Gunther in September 2024. With fans eagerly awaiting his return, everything points to WWE already preparing a big program to reintroduce the former NXT champion on television.
According to BodySlam.net in the last few hours, the company has internally discussed the possibility of starting a rivalry between Dragunov and Rusev. The report warns that "nothing is set in stone yet," but the rivalry would be the most serious option on the table to mark the return of the Mad Dragon.
In August, journalist Cory Hays posted an image of Dragunov on social media with the message "The time is coming," sparking speculation about his return. However, he later clarified that, although the return is imminent, it should not be expected "in the next few weeks."
Rusev returned to WWE earlier this year and recently ended his rivalry with Sheamus at WWE Clash in Paris. If the plans are confirmed, his next step could be to face a renewed Dragunov determined to regain lost ground.
This would be one of the most anticipated comebacks by a sector of the WWE Universe. In the short term, the company expects to reintegrate Gunther and Rey Mysterio. Other notable absences, but with no return date, are Liv Morgan and Kevin Owens.
