With only two weeks into his reign, Sami Zayn already has two successful defenses of the United States Championship. The first one was against the 17-time World Champion, John Cena and tonight on SmackDown, Sami issued an open challenge that was answered by the spectacular Rey Fénix, who had his first title opportunity since joining the company.
The title match started at a frenetic pace, with both wrestlers engaging in a series of quick exchanges that took the action outside the ring. The champion surprised Fénix with a powerslam, but the masked wrestler instantly responded with his agility, punishing Sami with a handspring back elbow and a dive towards ringside.
The fight continued with both exchanging their best moves. Rey Fénix reversed a Blue Thunder Bomb into a hurricanrana, and although he managed to hit a tremendous DDT, he couldn't secure the victory. On the other hand, Sami also failed in his attempts to end the match, due to the incredible resilience of the Mexican.
In the climax of the battle, Fénix unleashed a flurry of aerial attacks, including a foot stomp from the corner and a moonsault, but the champion managed to withstand. Zayn turned the tide with an Exploder Suplex on the ropes, to finally hit a definitive Helluva Kick that gave him the victory, in a memorable match.
