The charismatic and unforgettable Randy Savage will finally have a movie that tells his life and career. According to Deadline, the production company Artists For Artists, owned by Kenan Thompson, is developing the first fictional feature film inspired by the "Macho Man."
The script, already completed, was written by Lanny Poffo, Savage's brother who passed away in February 2023, in collaboration with Eric Shapiro. This is a project conceived as a personal and family tribute to the legendary wrestler, whose exuberant style and overpowering personality marked an era in professional wrestling.
Thompson, star of Saturday Night Live, confessed that the idea hits close to home, as he worked with Savage on a Nickelodeon promotional campaign in 1999. That collaboration left him with an unforgettable memory and cemented an admiration that he now seeks to capture on the big screen. "I am more than excited to bring Savage's story to the cinema. He was, without a doubt, one of the greatest of all time," declared the actor and producer.
Randy Mario Poffo, Savage's real name, was born in 1952 and went from aspiring to be a professional baseball player with the farm systems of St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds to becoming one of the most recognizable superstars in the world of wrestling. After a shoulder injury that ended his sports career, he poured all his energy into the ring.
Throughout his career, he won six world championships, and his colorful style, with impossible outfits and extravagant glasses, made him a pioneer of theatricality within WWE and WCW. His characteristic cry 'Oh yeah!' and his electrifying promos continue to be part of the collective memory of fans.
The "Macho Man" passed away in May 2011, victim of a heart attack while driving, at the age of 58. In 2015, he was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, closing a cycle of recognition for his lasting influence on the industry.
Until now, Savage had been remembered in WWE documentaries and specials, but this new project will be the first narrative film that will put his life at the center. More than a biography, a vibrant portrait of a figure who transcended sports to become a cultural icon of the 80s and 90s is expected.
Macho Man Randy Savage was the greatest showman of all time and the first bad boy of entertainment," noted Johnny Ryan Jr., partner of Kenan Thompson.
