If there is one thing that has characterized John Cena's retirement tour, it is the multiple theories that fans have raised about the opponents "The Greatest of All Time" would face in his final year as a professional. Some of them have come true, such as the case of AJ Styles. Others, however, are almost unattainable. Nevertheless, something has changed in the last few hours.
Let's first go to the root of this matter. Cena and Adam Copeland paid tribute to each other in their most recent matches in WWE and AEW respectively, in what had been considered a simple gesture of affection and mutual respect by the protagonists of one of the most remembered rivalries in modern WWE history. However, Copeland's announcement on the latest episode of AEW Dynamite was enough fuel for the rumor mill, giving rise to a somewhat far-fetched theory.
Copeland revealed that he would take a break to take care of Beth Phoenix, who was brutally attacked by FTR at AEW All Out. At that moment, many fans speculated about the possibility of the Canadian leaving Tony Khan's company to return to WWE in time to face Cena, or that even AEW had granted him special permission to do so. Theories that Mike Johnson of PWInsider has debunked in a recent post, where he explained the real reason behind "The Rated-R Superstar's" announcement.
"For some reason, our email and social media were flooded with a rumor claiming that Adam Copeland, from AEW, was removed from last night's television programming to be able to fight John Cena in one of Cena's final retirement matches in WWE. The rumor also maintains that Copeland would do so with AEW's approval. None of that is remotely true, as PWInsiderElite.com can confirm.", wrote Johnson.
"We are informed that Copeland's departure from AEW storylines is partly due to his acting career. The new season of Disney+'s series Percy Jackson will begin production next month, and Copeland plays Ares, the God of War, having appeared in the last two seasons. That is probably the reason why Copeland is taking time off from AEW television," added the journalist.
John Cena's retirement tour has been a rollercoaster of emotions for fans. Over the past nine months, "The Greatest of All Time" has left moments for the history books, such as his unexpected heel turn or the conquest of his seventeenth world championship, in addition to offering some of his best matches against Cody Rhodes, Sami Zayn, or Logan Paul.
However, his last match against Brock Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza was not well received by fans, who harshly criticized the company for a result that added nothing to the tour, especially with a squash match that has not convinced anyone. An error that WWE aims to correct with AJ Styles, who has been chosen as Cena's next opponent. The match will take place at Crown Jewel on October 11th.
