At the beginning of the nineties, Vince McMahon was going through a creative phase in which he bet on extravagant and caricature-like characters such as The Ultimate Warrior or Doink the Clown. In that context, Max Moon appeared, a masked wrestler with armor that simulated being a futuristic robot.
The mastermind behind the idea was Konnan, who in 1991 was already a star in Mexico thanks to his work in CMLL, his role as a soap opera actor, and even a musical project. The Mexican presented the concept to McMahon, who approved the plan and had an elaborate costume made. Thus, Konnan debuted as Max Moon in 1992 in some WWE live shows.
However, the adventure was short-lived. According to Konnan himself, he quickly grew tired of the exhausting WWE touring when he had stability and good opportunities in Mexico. The solution was radical: he stopped showing up for tapings and the company decided to fire him.
Vince McMahon did not discard the character and assigned it to Paul Diamond, known until then as Kato in The Orient Express. Diamond inherited the costume, but the bet did not pay off and in 1993 he was released from his contract.
Later on, Konnan returned to Mexico and became a key figure in launching Lucha Libre AAA, a company in which he still collaborates and that marked a new era in the wrestling scene. Years later, he would make the definitive leap to the United States, not in WWE, but as part of the WCW roster, where he would achieve great popularity in the second half of the 90s.
This year, Konnan was inducted into the Lucha Libre AAA Hall of Fame. It happened at the Triplemanía XXXIII event, where he was introduced by his personal friend, Rey Mysterio, in front of a large crowd.
