A few minutes ago, WWE has confirmed the official retirement date of Cena. The 17-time WWE World Champion will make his final appearance as a professional wrestler on Saturday, December 13th at the last Saturday Night's Main Event of the year. The company has already released the official poster for the event on its social media, and pre-sale will start on October 15th at 10 am ET, with general sale opening two days later at the same time.
The official announcement, which comes several months after it was reported by specialized media, has caused a lot of commotion within the community for different reasons. The first being that it will take place on an edition of the NBC program, which has received many criticisms in its various editions for the excessive amount of commercials. However, it is important to note that the next two editions of this event (November 1st and the aforementioned December 13th) will be broadcast on the Peacock platform in the US territory, so the amount of commercials is likely to be reduced.
Another controversy surrounding Cena's last date is that, against all odds, it will be held at the Capital One Arena in Washington DC, despite the fact that throughout the year it was assumed that Cena would bid farewell to wrestling in Boston, Massachusetts, his home state. Instead, Boston will host a special appearance by the wrestler on the November 10th episode of Raw.
There are still three months and five confirmed appearances of Cena ahead. Given how unpredictable his last year has been in terms of opponent selection and internal wrestler narrative, it is very difficult to know for sure who his final rival will be. Drew McIntyre, Gunther, Seth Rollins, or even Dominik Mysterio could be the chosen ones.
As I mentioned, the event will be available on the Peacock platform, owned by NBC, which recently lost the broadcasting rights of the company's PPVs. Internationally, following the logic of previous editions of the show, it should be able to be watched completely for free on the company's YouTube channel.
