Hiroshi Tanahashi is already approaching the final stretch of his career, and in a press conference held in Japan, the NJPW legend has provided an update on his retirement, with his farewell match set for January 4, 2026 at the Tokyo Dome, during Wrestle Kingdom 20.
For now, it is unknown who his opponent will be in that historic event, but Tanahashi did make one thing clear: his last match will be a one-on-one, just like his debut. "I prefer individual matches. My debut was like that, and I want my last one to be too. Every January 4th, I wear a different suit, but this year will be the last... so there will be a special outfit just for that match."
The Ace explained that he is looking to close the circle with his choice of opponent, although he preferred not to give names. "I want there to be a connection. I want to close the circle in some way... that's all I'll say," he commented to the media.
Regarding his retirement tour, Tanahashi assured that it is a unique experience, facing past rivals and sharing the ring with the new generations. He acknowledged that he would like to fight everyone, but time does not allow it.
The conference also served to announce that tickets for Wrestle Kingdom 20 are now on sale worldwide. Alongside Tanahashi was Aaron Wolf, a new signing for NJPW and an Olympic medalist, who will debut in the ring at the Tokyo Dome. It was clarified, however, that Wolf will not be the Ace's farewell opponent.
Tanahashi is considered one of the fundamental pillars in the modern history of New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Known as "The Ace," he was the face of the company for over two decades, revitalizing its popularity with great matches and eight world title reigns. In addition to his in-ring career, he currently holds the position of NJPW president, where he works on expanding the brand and guiding the new generation of wrestlers who will take over.
