Mustafa Ali returned to WWE two years after his surprising departure. And he did it to pick up the storyline he was starring in when he received the news of his release. The return took place last night on the latest episode of NXT, where Ali interrupted a promo by Ethan Page to claim the title opportunity he never got to cash in on.

Mustafa's promo immediately connected with the fans, especially when he recalled how WWE got rid of him with a simple phone call, ending his dream of becoming the NXT North American Champion. A sincere and reality-based speech for which Mustafa has been praised by both NXT and TNA, as reported by the specialized media outlet Fightful.

"Mustafa Ali's promo on NXT was well received by people within NXT and TNA. At Fightful, we had heard for some time that Shawn Michaels was strongly against his release and had plans for Mustafa Ali, including making him the North American Champion. Such was the commitment to that idea that Ali even sent the North American champion's gear for production," the outlet wrote.

Mustafa Ali spent seven of the last nine years of his professional career as a WWE superstar. A career full of ups and downs, characterized by continuous gimmick changes that never quite worked out as the company hoped, with the most evident case being the failure of RETRIBUTION.

Despite everything, the wrestler earned the respect of fans thanks to his in-ring performance. However, he never received a real push from the company. Ali was finally released in September 2023, just days before NXT No Mercy, where he was scheduled to face Dominik Mysterio for the North American Championship.

Once his 90-day non-compete clause was fulfilled, the wrestler officially became a free agent, announcing his "World Tour Campaign", where he maintained the politician character he portrayed in his final stage in WWE. This new phase of his career led him to sign with TNA Wrestling, a promotion he worked for six months.

After that time was up, Ali once again became a free agent, resuming his "World Tour Campaign" to finally return to the Anthem Media company, with which he signed a new contract. Now, with the alliance of WWE and TNA, Ali will have the opportunity to conquer the championship he had his sights on 750 days ago.
