Alberto Del Rio, who was part of the WWE family for several years before his departure in 2016, recently spoke about his relationship with Vince McMahon and explained why the former company president held him in high esteem.
In an interview with Eduardo Bates, the four-time world champion recalled his time in WWE and highlighted McMahon's influence throughout the industry. According to Del Rio, most people do not understand the extent to which Vince shaped the modern wrestling business.
Vince created all the characters; the entire golden era of WWE exists because of him. What most people don't know, because they really don't know him, is that he is the mastermind behind the industry. Everything we have today in wrestling exists because of him.
The Mexican wrestler added that McMahon considered him one of his favorites due to his dedication, professionalism, and ability to connect with the audience. Del Rio stated that he always knew how to make fans believe in what was happening inside the ring and feel the emotions he sought to convey: "I was always one of his favorites because of my commitment and effectiveness, because Alberto Del Rio can do whatever he wants with the audience. I make them believe, I make them feel that what happens in the ring is real, exactly as I want them to feel."
The relationship between the two seems to have been strong, to the point that Del Rio continues to defend Vince McMahon even as the former CEO faces a lawsuit for trafficking and abuse. Still, many fans do not share Alberto's view of McMahon, and everything indicates that this perception is unlikely to change.
During his time in WWE, Alberto Del Rio built an outstanding record that made him one of the most successful Latino wrestlers in the company's history. He was a four-time world champion, in addition to winning the prestigious Royal Rumble in 2011 and the Money in the Bank that same year. He also won the United States Championship twice and had memorable rivalries with figures like John Cena, CM Punk, Dolph Ziggler, and Sheamus.
