Blake Monroe, formerly known as Mariah May in AEW, is going through one of the most important moments of her career after debuting in WWE NXT. In a recent interview for Busted Open Radio After Dark, the British wrestler spoke openly about her departure from AEW and her decision to start anew under a new name and identity.
Monroe explained that, although her time in AEW allowed her to grow and be part of one of the most prominent rivalries of the year alongside Toni Storm, she felt that her story there had come to an end. "I had an amazing experience, did things I'm proud of, but I reached a point where I only had one big story... and nothing more. I wanted something bigger, a new challenge," she confessed.
Before signing with WWE, Monroe even considered going to wrestle in Japan. However, after talking with the Stamford company, she was convinced that was the right step: "When I spoke with WWE, I was surprised by how much they cared about my character, The Glamour, and how they wanted to enhance it. I realized I had a big decision to make."
The arrival at NXT also meant a name change, something Monroe embraced enthusiastically. "I like that Mariah May has finished her story. It was like closing a chapter. Besides, I never really liked using my real name, so this change gives me the freedom to create something new," she explained. The name "Blake Monroe" is also a personal tribute: Blake is her niece's name.
Blake Monroe has been feuding with Jordynne Grace and Kelani Jordan in recent weeks. Her last match dates back to September 27, when she faced Grace one-on-one during the No Mercy event.
