With John Cena's retirement tour entering its final stretch, the wrestling world has been filled with speculation about who his last opponents will be. And one of the names that has emerged strongly - and arrogantly - is that of the current Intercontinental champion, "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio.
During an interview with Graps & Yaps, recorded this past weekend during WWE's visit to Australia, Mysterio was asked about the possibility of facing the 17-time world champion. He didn't hold back. "He's an old loony," he bluntly stated. "I'd be more than happy to put the final nail in his coffin."
The words of young Mysterio are no coincidence. John Cena only needs to win the Intercontinental Championship to become a Grand Slam Champion, and Dominik didn't hesitate to use that fact to fuel the tension. "At the end of the day, I'm here. If John Cena wants something, he can come and get it," he confidently affirmed.
We still don't know who will be John Cena's opponent on his final date, although some media outlets have confirmed that Gunther will be the chosen one to carry out the task. Before that moment arrives, there has also been talk of a match between John Cena and Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental Championship at Survivor Series. That match has not been confirmed yet, but we are close to finding out if it is indeed WWE's plan.
The only major title missing from John Cena's collection is the WWE Intercontinental Championship, the piece that would complete his resume to become a Grand Slam Champion (world, United States, tag team, and intercontinental champion). Winning it in the final stretch of his career would not only close a historical gap in his curriculum after more than two decades at the top, but it would also round off his legacy as one of the most complete competitors of the modern era, adding a symbolic milestone that his fans have been demanding for years and that would fit perfectly into his farewell tour.
