2025 has witnessed many events in the world of professional wrestling, including the beginning of the Netflix era in WWE, the passing of Hulk Hogan, and, of course, the retirement of John Cena. "The Greatest of All Time" has dedicated the entire year to carrying out a grand retirement tour that will culminate on December 13 at Saturday Night's Main Event.
After a tour start with ups and downs, hindered by a heel turn that didn't quite convince the audience, Cena finally found the recipe for success at WrestleMania 41, where he delivered one of the best matches of his recent years. Since then, the seventeen-time world champion has shown to be in great shape, treating fans to memorable showdowns, such as his recent bout against AJ Styles at WWE Crown Jewel.
His recent appearances have left fans wanting more. With many talents Cena could potentially face for the last time, but time constraints may rule them out. When we add up the substantial earnings TKO is raking in from the tour and how much John is enjoying it, it's no wonder many fans are speculating about the possibility of the legend extending his tour until WrestleMania 42, where he could have a perfect retirement on the grandest stage possible. Something Cena continues to deny.
"Despite any speculation or rumor, on July 6, 2024, I announced my retirement from WWE. I am far from perfect, but I strive to be a person of value. December 13, 2025 will be my final match. I am immensely grateful for every moment WWE has given me. I am excited for December 13 and hope to see you all one last time," wrote Cena.
WWE Money in the Bank 2024 will be remembered for the surprising announcement of John Cena's retirement. The seventeen-time world champion made an unplanned appearance at the Toronto event to inform fans of his decision to hang up his boots. The wrestler revealed that 2025 would be his last year as an active wrestler, hinting at a farewell tour that would span the entire year.
The announcement caught fans off guard, as they did not expect to hear the word "retirement" from one of the most important wrestlers in the company's history. Shortly after, WWE confirmed a schedule with around thirty dates, of which only four remain, including two episodes of Monday Night Raw, Survivor Series, and Saturday Night's Main Event, where his final match will take place.
