Mercedes Moné is, without a doubt, one of the women of the moment in the professional wrestling business. "The CEO" has achieved the staggering feat of twelve championships across the world, breaking the record of Último Dragon, who held ten belts simultaneously.
This "Belt Collector" gimmick has sparked a great debate in the community, with some arguing that independent companies will be affected after losing their women's championships, while others claim that the visibility these promotions will receive as a result more than makes up for it.
Tony Khan, president of AEW, supports this second view. He explained this in a recent interview with Z100 New York, where he stated that Moné does this out of love for wrestling and not for money, as the promotions she is working with could not afford a large payout.
"Mercedes has won belts from all over the world, so we will have to see if her match against Kris Statlander will be for multiple titles. But, with all the commitments Mercedes has taken on, I find it truly impressive," Khan said.
"I've said it before and I'll say it again: that shows that for her it's not just about greed and money, because many of the places where she is wrestling -Winnipeg, Canada, Denmark- are not exactly the highest paying. She's not really making money from this," he stated.
"She is passionate about wrestling. She loves helping companies grow, she loves meeting new young stars and she truly cares about the art and sport of wrestling, and for her it's about competing. So, as a competitor, she wants to go out and fight all over the world," he concluded.
After completing a perfect weekend (defending the CMLL Women's Championship on Friday, winning the ROH Women's World Television Championship on Saturday at AEW WrestleDream, and the WPW Women's Title on Sunday), Mercedes has already set her sights on her next goal, which is to conquer the AEW Women's World Championship, currently held by Kris Statlander. So far, the company has not officially confirmed the match, which would take place at AEW Full Gear.
