The passage of Rusev through All Elite Wrestling was not particularly satisfying for either party. In his five years in the company, the Bulgarian only managed to win the TBS Championship and participate in a limited number of storylines, until he was finally removed from television programming due to lack of creative plans. A period that Rusev recalled in a recent interview for CBS Sports.

"In the last five years, I had between 20 and 30 matches. In my time, I had 30 matches in 30 days", said Rusev. "The downtime is what is most noticeable. We only have this body and this age for a limited time. We can't do this job forever, so we must take advantage of it while we are young. I was on the sidelines for a long time, unable to do what I love, which is performing for people in professional wrestling".

Rusev also explained how the creative aspect works in AEW, where the freedom granted to talent can work against them. "You go out there, into the wild, into the darkness, into the abyss, and you have to figure it all out for yourself. You don't have producers or the creative team. I had to dig deep inside myself to find out who I was and what I wanted to represent. From there, we started developing the character of The Redeemer," Rusev said about it.

Rusev left AEW earlier this year to return to WWE. Since then, the Bulgarian has enjoyed a prominent role on Monday Night Raw, where he had an intense rivalry with Sheamus before setting his sights on the Intercontinental Championship, currently held by Dominik Mysterio. Tonight, the Bulgarian will have the opportunity to win it when he faces the champion and Penta in a triple threat match on a new edition of Saturday Night's Main Event.
