It is well known that the relationship between WWE and All Elite Wrestling is not the best in the business. If we add to that the jabs that some of their talents usually throw at the "rival" company, we have a breeding ground for fans to set social media on fire with each new controversy. In this sense, CM Punk decided to stir the pot after the celebration of Saturday Night's Main Event with a photograph that generated a great media buzz.
"The Best in the World" took a backstage snapshot with three of his colleagues, Cody Rhodes, Jade Cargill, and Ricky Saints, all of them currently champions in WWE after their time in All Elite Wrestling. "Look at us," CM Punk wrote on his Instagram account.
The photograph and the message quickly circulated on the Internet, with many assuming it was an indirect attack against AEW by showing four talents who left the company to succeed in WWE. However, the photograph brought a smile to Tony Khan. This is how the AEW president explained it in a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show.
"I saw that and I think AEW is having a great year and is in a fantastic place. The roster right now is putting on great shows, and I'm proud of what they're doing right now. It made me smile because it reminded me of Double or Nothing 2020, the first pay-per-view of the pandemic. Cody won the TNT title, Mox retained the AEW world title against the beloved and late Mr. Brodie Lee. After the show, Cody and Mox took a photo. I thought it was interesting and shows how much time has passed... I remember the photo that Cody and Mox took, I think I took it," Khan said.
"I have relationships with all four of them, and they are very different from each other. I could talk for two hours about each of them and why I like them, why I thought they were great in AEW, their matches, or how much I appreciate them as individuals. None of them are wrestling in AEW anymore. It just reminded me of the photo in Jacksonville, taking that picture, and how incredible it is that five and a half years have flown by," he added.
