John Cena is facing the last days of his career and remains firm in his stance: on December 13, at Saturday Night's Main Event from Washington, D.C., it will be his final match. Although his farewell was announced months ago, a part of the audience continues to believe that everything will end up stretching until WrestleMania 42. Cena, however, denies it emphatically.
In the Raw Recap podcast, recorded after the WWE Raw episode at Madison Square Garden, the current Intercontinental champion was asked if the level of his recent performances had raised internal doubts. Cena assured that it had not: having a deadline is helping him to make every appearance as if it were the last.
No. What helps me cross the finish line is precisely that there is no tomorrow. I have always given my all.
Cena pointed out that this final stretch has also allowed him to continue learning. Working with younger rivals, facing new styles, and interacting with another generation has given him a special energy. However, his health and his own commitment prevent him from extending this journey beyond the point set over a year ago.
"I am working with new talent, with people who bring fresh ideas," he declared. "It's great because I keep learning. That will never fade away, but I have to listen to my body. There is nothing that makes me think I should continue after December 13".
Regarding the insistence of some fans that his last fight should take place at WrestleMania, Cena recalled that his story does not have to follow the usual pattern.
I know there is a lot of speculation because others ended at WrestleMania. But that's because that's how they did it before me. I said 15 months ago that I was going to do a year, and I am fulfilling what I said.
The 17-time world champion appreciated the recognition of the quality of his recent matches, something that confirms that the demand of his style has weighed as much for him as for the audience.
"Being told that you are having some of the best matches of your career at this point shows that I am not the only one exhausted. Every time I step through the curtain, people feel that I give everything I have, and that is exactly what I want them to understand when December 13 arrives".
