CM Punk is closely following the latest chapters of John Cena's career, and he doesn't take it for granted. In a recent interview with the program Mostly Sports, the world champion talked about his role in Cena's farewell tour and what it has meant to be able to face him one last time this year at Night of Champions.
Punk recalled his return to WWE in 2023 and directly linked it to this final stretch of Cena's career, as if everything had fallen into place at the right moment.
For me, it's like the universe always puts you where you need to be. Coming back to WWE two years ago was almost a matter of destiny, because suddenly John Cena starts this retirement tour and, every step of the way, I've been fortunate enough to be there to witness it. I feel like this is where I needed to be.
The Chicago native was also asked about the Greatest of All Time label that WWE is promoting for Cena. Punk admitted that the debate will always be subjective, but made it clear that, as far as his generation is concerned, he hasn't seen anyone more deserving of that recognition.
According to him, Cena has not only been a box office draw, but also the perfect example of how the company's public face should behave: always at the forefront of promotion, charismatic on the mic, and willing to do all the unseen work when the cameras are off.
For Punk, the numbers and consistency speak for themselves: in the last 20 years, John Cena has been the true benchmark of WWE, and bidding him farewell now, from within, is as emotional as it is inspiring.
