Nowadays it is not uncommon to see intergender matches in the independent circuit and other wrestling companies. However, it is much more complicated to see something like this in top-level companies such as WWE and All Elite Wrestling, where mixed matches are common, in which men and women compete against their own gender, with some spots involving both sexes.
There are many reasons why intergender matches seem to have no place in this type of companies. One of them lies in the rejection of some of the workers themselves, who do not believe that these fights are suitable for their shows. One of its detractors is MVP, who in a recent appearance on Marking Out Podcast, explained why he is not in favor of intergender matches.
"I'm going to upset many of you right now and that's okay. I'm not a fan of intergender wrestling. I don't like it, I'm not a fan. Again, this is what I was talking about before: the video game culture - which is now in wrestling - grew up playing with Chun-Li and beating people up. I approach wrestling from the mindset of simulated combat. I've always liked the 'shoot' style, I like the real. That's why I fell in love with Japanese wrestling," he said.
"As soon as you do intergender things, it's no longer believable. You don't have intergender boxing. You don't have intergender MMA because biology matters. I once asked my ex-girlfriend, who was a professional wrestler, I was talking to her about intergender wrestling and I said: okay, all equal. A wrestler, your height and weight, with a skill level comparable to yours. You fight, a real boxing match, what happens? She said: 'I get killed'. She didn't wait a second. She just said: 'I get killed'. It's biology."
"When I was in the indies many, many years ago, I had an intergender match and that shit was stupid. I wish I hadn't done it, but I was convinced and I was younger. I'm not a fan, I don't like it. There are people who do like it and there are people who have a lot of fun doing it and enjoy it. As I say, if people want to see it and are buying a ticket to see it, then I'm not going to say they're doing it wrong, because if you sell tickets and cover your costs and feed a fan base, then go ahead. But I'm not a fan," he said.
