WWE is considering the idea of having John Cena open Saturday Night's Main Event

'The Greatest of All Time' would have asked the company to allow him to compete in the first match of the event

Even so, most people within WWE prefer that the seventeen-time world champion close the show

In just two days we will say goodbye to one of the most important careers in the history of professional wrestling. In two days John Cena will have his last match as an active wrestler with the promise of never competing again. Saturday Night's Main Event and the city of Washington D.C. have been chosen as the stages for "The Greatest of All Time" to put an end to his retirement tour.

For this occasion, Cena wanted to share the spotlight with some of the future WWE superstars. That's why he specifically asked the company to include exhibition matches between main roster talents and young prospects from the Performance Center like Je'Von Evans, Oba Femi, and Sol Ruca.

However, the seventeen-time world champion wants to go even further, as he shared his desire earlier this week to open the show, letting one of these exhibition matches be the main event of the night. An idea that, according to Bryan Alvarez from Wrestling Observer, WWE would have accepted. However, a recent report from Wrestlevotes reveals that the company may not be so sure about it.

"Wrestlevotes Radio consulted within WWE and stated that most people in the company want John Cena to close the show, although both ideas have been considered. Several influential figures want John Cena to be the one to close the event. There are no firm details about the placement on the card, but having Cena open the show is an option 'on the table'," wrote the publication Fightful Select.

Regardless of the creative aspects, John Cena has had the freedom to choose how he will end his professional career. It was his idea to have a retirement tour that spanned a whole year, as well as his desire to promote younger talent in his final show. It remains to be seen if the company will grant him this last request, which may not sit well with many fans who expect Cena to headline the event that will mark the end of his career.
