Jey Uso was one of the standout superstars of WWE in 2025. The Samoan wrestler received a huge push that led him to conquer the World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Gunther in one of the most controversial matches in recent years. A large sector of fans heavily criticized the company for allowing a mid-card talent to defeat - moreover, by submission - one of the most credible wrestlers on the entire roster.
However, the criticisms had started long before, intensifying after Jey won the men's Royal Rumble match, where he ultimately eliminated John Cena. Currently, Jey remains one of the most polarizing talents in all of WWE, although he still has the support of many fans and his fellow wrestlers. This includes CM Punk, who did not hesitate to defend the Samoan in a recent interview for Busted Open.
"I mention Jey Uso as the number one shining example... I'm competing with John Cena and with Jey Uso to see who sells more shirts on any given night. Everyone goes crazy with his music. They're 'yeeting'. They want him to do it again. This guy can come out on TV for 10 minutes and just 'yeet'. But then you go on the internet and read: 'Oh, he's the worst wrestler alive'. Is he? Or are you just extremely hyperbolic?
Nowadays everything is: 'This is the best in history. This is the worst in history. I don't like it, so you shouldn't like it either'. Like what you like, defend it. I try to stay away from negativity. Jey Uso is freaking phenomenal. He is. 100%. We just live such public lives that everyone wants to point fingers and laugh if we slip on a banana peel or make a mistake," said CM Punk.
CM Punk and Jey Uso competed for the World Heavyweight Championship at the WWE Saturday Night's Main Event edition on November 1st. That match was not without criticism after Jey did not properly sell his opponent's spinning neckbreaker, leading to the move having to be repeated. Following that defeat, Jey decided to return to the tag team division alongside his brother Jimmy to capture the World Tag Team Championships.
