John Cena as host of WrestleMania 42 was not in WWE's plans in December 2025, when he retired after surrendering to Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event. According to the latest episode of WrestleVotes Radio, Cena learned about the idea in February and accepted it as part of his new long-term contract without matches.
The decision came after slow ticket sales for the event on April 18-19 at Allegiant Stadium. WWE sought a star attraction with the 17-time champion to boost ticket sales, a common tactic when the numbers are not convincing. Cena signed on for another five years as an ambassador.
Following his announcement on social media confirming the role, Cena returns to the spotlight of Mania without stepping into the ring. Hollywood fills his schedule (he will be filming "One Attempt Remaining" for Netflix), but this role marks his first major post-retirement presence on WWE TV.
Ticket sales were 10,000 behind per night compared to WrestleMania 41 (56-60k). Bringing in Cena, despite being "retired," is a masterstroke to fill Las Vegas and capitalize on his "Great of All Time" status without breaking his promise to not wrestle anymore.
The multi-year agreement ensures Cena in WWE as a key figure outside the ring. Occasional commentator? Storyline authority? Hosting Mania is the first step in an era where his microphone and charisma will continue to define great moments.
