The road to WrestleMania 42 brought an unexpected surprise leading up to one of the most important matches of the grand event. Pat McAfee returned without prior notice to the television programming of WWE to attack Cody Rhodes and reveal to the world that he was the mysterious ally of Randy Orton in his recent heel turn.

A story that seems to have a lot of potential ahead. According to Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE plans to pit Orton and McAfee against Rhodes and Jelly Roll at Backlash, the post-WrestleMania event scheduled for May 9th in Tampa, Florida.

It is worth remembering that Roll has played a significant role in "The Viper's" heel turn, even being attacked by him when trying to reason with him. That was Roll's last television appearance on WWE programming. It is unknown if the company's current plans include his return before, during, or after WrestleMania.

Roll's inclusion in this story was already hinted at by Wrestlevotes yesterday. The outlet published a report revealing that WWE had to rewrite the Orton and Rhodes story due to the lukewarm fan reaction to McAfee's inclusion. The first measure was taken just a couple of hours after that segment, with an impromptu promo by Cody in the ring to heat up the rivalry. Tonight, the story will continue in the penultimate episode of SmackDown before the grand event.
