John Cena is hinting at having a role in WWE Backlash, the first major event of the company after WrestleMania 42. The show will take place on Saturday, May 9th at the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida, and Cena has already suggested that he wants to do something special for the fans.
In a message posted on social media on his 49th birthday, Cena wrote that he wished it was 2023 to have "other matters" in WWE, but that even so, he will try to do something "epic" in Tampa. He also mentioned that he promised something special to the WWE Club and that it is worth paying attention to what might happen.
At the moment, there are no matches announced for Backlash, so Cena's role remains a mystery. However, his post suggests that he will not just make a token appearance and that WWE might be saving an important moment for him that night.
Man, I wish we were back in 2023! Maybe I would have other plans at @WWE #Backlash. But, oh well, the years go by. Still, I'm going to try to do something epic in Tampa on May 9th. I promised the WWE Club something special... stay tuned.
The situation is also influenced by the changing plans surrounding the post-WrestleMania schedule. Dave Meltzer from Wrestling Observer recently pointed out that, before the idea was scrapped, Pat McAfee and Randy Orton were linked to a story that would have involved Jelly Roll and Cody Rhodes, but that plan no longer seems to be moving forward.
For now, Cena finds himself back in the spotlight just after hosting WrestleMania 42. If he delivers on his promise, Backlash could have one of those unexpected moments that often define a WWE PLE.
