WWE has announced a new edition of SmackDown loaded with content for May 8, with two matches, the live appearance of Gunther, and the funeral of the Gingerbread Man. The lineup continues to develop several storylines that originated on Friday's show, including the rivalry for the United States women's title and the chaos surrounding Trick Williams and Sami Zayn.
Giulia demanded her title rematch, but Tiffany Stratton preferred to defend first against Kiana James, thus confirming that match for next week. In parallel, Alexa Bliss, Charlotte Flair, and Rhea Ripley will face Fatal Influence after Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid attacked Bliss and Flair, with Ripley coming to the rescue despite the existing tension between her and Flair.
Gunther will return after attacking Cody Rhodes following Rhodes' victory over Ricky Saints, a move that positions him as the next big rival for the WWE title. That segment also reinforced the idea that the Austrian is ready to return to the forefront of the blue brand's title scene.
The funeral of the Gingerbread Man, on the other hand, continues the bizarre story that ended with Sami Zayn destroying the suit on television and leaving Trick Williams out of time to save it. It is one of those absurd storylines that WWE is using to keep Zayn, Trick, and the rest of the cast involved in the conversation leading up to Backlash.
