Andrade El Idolo has become the new IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion today after defeating Yota Tsuji on the first night of Wrestling Dontaku in Fukuoka, Japan. The match was decided when Andrade hit two consecutive DMs, the first one against the ring post and the second one on the mat, before securing the three count.
The defeat marks Tsuji's second title stumble in less than a month, as he had also lost the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship to Callum Newman at Sakura Genesis on April 4. Nevertheless, his reign with the Global belt had been one of the most prominent in the division since Wrestle Kingdom 18.
After the victory, Andrade asked who his first challenger would be and both Shota Umino and Drilla Moloney appeared. The new champion stated that he would defend the title in a three-way match against both, although a date for that match has not been announced yet.
This title change was the seventh in the history of the Global title, which debuted in 2024, and makes Andrade the fifth wrestler to hold the championship. His triumph further solidifies his presence in NJPW, where he continues to establish himself as one of the most important international figures today.
