WWE considered bringing back the New World Order during the pandemic era without live audiences, as former writer Chris Dunn has revealed. The idea, as he described it, was to form a new nWo with Sheamus, Cesaro, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Lars Sullivan.
Dunn stated that the plan was very close to being finalized. He even explained that the new faction would have been introduced by one of the original legendary members of the nWo, although he doesn't remember which one, and the idea was to debut at the Performance Center and develop the story as they went along.
The project ended up falling through because, according to Dunn, those involved did not pass the COVID checks and the moment was buried. Still, the proposal shows how far WWE was willing to go to draw on nostalgia to create something new in a time when they needed attention-grabbing ideas without a live audience.
The original nWo revolutionized wrestling in WCW in 1996 by popularizing the "cool" villain persona, and later WWE tried to revive it in 2002 with Hogan, Nash, and Hall. That version also didn't last long, and the pandemic attempt would have faced the same age-old problem: how to update a historic name without losing its impact.
