The first names of the G1 Climax are now official. NJPW confirmed 14 out of the 20 participants for this year's tournament, which will start on July 11th at the NOW Arena in Illinois and will conclude on August 15th at Sumo Hall.
The big surprise on the list is Gabe Kidd, representing AEW, whose name was included despite being out of action since AEW Dynasty in April due to a shoulder injury. His presence adds even more interest to an edition that already promises to be very competitive.
There are still six spots to be defined. Three of them will be filled by the winners of the IWGP tag team titles match at Dominion between The Knock Out Brothers and HENARE & Great-O-Khan, while the last four will be decided through play-in matches during the Road to G1 Climax tour, starting on June 19th.
The winner of last year's G1 Climax was Konosuke Takeshita, who claimed the tournament and made a statement within New Japan. His victory solidified him as one of the strongest figures in the company and made it clear that the G1 remains the ultimate stage to crown a true star.
For now, the confirmed lineup features two very solid blocks with several absences still to be resolved. The tournament is starting to take shape, and with several spots still open, the road to the G1 will continue to generate news in the coming weeks.
