Jinder Mahal recalled a very delicate moment during his time in WWE and revealed that Vince McMahon was very close to firing him due to an error that occurred during a match on Raw. The incident took place in 2017, in a singles match against Finn Bálor that ended with a concussion for the Irishman.
As Mahal explained to TMZ, the issue arose during a spot they often repeated at live events. Bálor was running from the ropes when he received a forearm from the former WWE champion, but a mistimed move resulted in the injury.
"Well, it was actually a week before I was assigned to SmackDown, before becoming WWE champion," Mahal recalled. "Finn Balor and I were in a singles match on Raw, and accidentally I gave him a concussion. He was bouncing off the ropes and I hit him with a forearm. We used to do that move every night at live events as a crowd-pleaser. He bounced off the ropes, I hit him with a forearm, but it was just a synchronization error, and wrestling is a game of inches. If you deviate an inch, you could end your career. You could break your neck or anything could happen. A serious injury. I caused that concussion to Finn Balor."
The wrestler admitted he felt terrible upon learning what had happened and remembered that, upon reaching the Gorilla Position, McMahon told him he should fire him. Mahal made it clear that moment could have completely altered his future within the company, as just a week later he was moved to SmackDown and shortly after became WWE champion.
"I felt terrible. When I got to the Gorilla Position, Vince told me: 'I should fire you'. That would have changed the course of my life again, because a week later I went to SmackDown, another week later I was the number one contender, and a month later, I became WWE Champion. Everything could have ended if, when I returned to Gorilla, Vince had told me: 'You're fired'. It was very possible that it could have happened."
He also mentioned that, after being drafted to SmackDown, he spoke with Road Dogg and was willing to accept any punishment. Mahal said he understood that if he was in a tough spot in the company, whatever came his way would be part of the process and he was ready to face it.
