AJ Styles said that he would like to see WWE make the leap to Japan through an acquisition or a similar alliance to the one the company made last year with AAA in Mexico. In his podcast Phenomenally Retro, he explained that he envisions a structure in which WWE contributes its stamp without erasing what already makes Japanese wrestling special.
Styles emphasized that it wouldn't be about changing the culture, but rather giving a unique touch to the project. He also pointed out that the exchange of talent between Japan and Mexico has been successful for years, and WWE could leverage that model to strengthen the Japanese scene.
The Phenomenal One also mentioned the impact that several Japanese wrestlers have had within WWE, such as Shinsuke Nakamura, IYO SKY, and Naraku, previously known as EVIL. For him, with the right support, Japanese wrestling could regain some of the shine it had in its prime.
I would love for WWE to find a way to be in Japan similar to how they are with AAA. We're not going to change what they're doing. We're not trying to change the culture. We're just adding our personal touch.
"I believe that, with WWE's help, we could revive Japanese wrestling and bring it back to what it was. I would love to see it back at the Tokyo Dome," he stated. "I'm not talking about something like a WrestleMania there. I'm just saying the company filling up the Tokyo Dome like it used to... when was it, in the early '90s? But yeah, that would depend on the talent."
Styles mentioned that he would love to see a Japanese promoter once again filling up the Tokyo Dome like in the great early '90s. The former leader of the Bullet Club spoke from the experience of someone who knows the Japanese scene well and believes there is still a lot of untapped potential there.
