Athena will go down in history as one of the great figures of Ring of Honor of all time, and now also as the champion with the longest reign in the modern era of professional wrestling. This past weekend, "The Fallen Goddess" surpassed Roman Reigns' reign as WWE Universal Champion.
Athena now has 1,319 days as ROH World Champion. Reigns' reign ended with a total of 1,316 days. "I meant FOREVER!!!! Longest reigning champion of the modern era belongs to me and me only!!", wrote the Texan on her social media to celebrate her achievement.
Athena captured the championship by defeating Mercedes Martinez at ROH Final Battle 2022. That day, December 10, marked the beginning of a journey that has continued to accumulate achievements, including 37 title defenses in companies like All Elite Wrestling, STARDOM, Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling, Prestige Wrestling, in addition to Ring of Honor.
Her last title defense took place last month at the ROH Global Wars: Cincinnati event, where she put the gold on the line against STARDOM star, Syuri. A month earlier, the Texan successfully defended her title in a Survival of the Fittest, where she faced off against her partner Billie Starkz, Yuka Sakazaki, Maya World, Trish Adora, and Zayda Steel.
The current ROH Women's World Championship was created on January 12, 2020, although it would not officially debut until the August 11, 2021 episode of Women's Division Wednesday, a web series launched by the company that same year as part of the relaunch and strengthening of its women's division.
The current title was introduced to replace the previous Women of Honor World Championship, which was deactivated in January 2020. The first champion of the new ROH Women's World Championship was Rok-C (Roxanne Perez in WWE), who won a tournament to crown the inaugural champion on September 12, 2021 at the Death Before Dishonor XVIII event.
