Darby Allin surprised the world of professional wrestling after becoming the AEW World Champion in the Spring BreakThru special last April. The surprise was not only the victory over MJF, one of the biggest talents in the business, but also that the match lasted only two minutes.
As expected, many fans did not fully understand this move by the company, although most of them ended up recognizing the great reign that Allin left for history. Now, four months later, Darby has reflected on one of his greatest feats as a professional, stating that the plan was always to have a very brief match.
"Yes, totally. For me — and this is just my opinion — many things in the world of wrestling are more like 15 or 20-minute matches. So, if you catch someone by surprise, everything becomes like: 'Wow! Damn, I can't look away for a second!'. Think about when Mox defeated Punk years ago. I didn't know that was going to happen; I saw it and thought: 'Wow, this is incredible!'. Not everything has to be a 25-minute match, dragged out to exhaustion, with just strikes. If you punch a buddy in the nuts and hit him with four coffin drops, I'm pretty sure he's going to stay on the ground," Allin said in an interview with Adrian Hernandez.
Allin's reign as the company's top champion ended after 40 days, during which he defended the title eight times. Numbers rarely seen in this industry, which also earned him the respect of many fans. Darby lost the title to MJF in a "title vs. hair" match at AEW Double or Nothing, with an intervention by Kevin Knight being decisive for "The Devil's" victory.
