Avery Styles will not remember his debut in professional wrestling as a special night. His participation in the show GCW Rude Awakening was accompanied by an unexpected controversy after promoter Arik Cannon posted some criticisms on the Internet. In them, he claimed that AJ Styles' son did not help set up the chairs for the fans during the show's preparation phase.
"The Phenomenal One" did not hesitate to come to his son's defense, pointing out that he was only paid to compete in the ring, and that these kinds of issues should not be aired publicly, but discussed in private. In the most recent edition of his podcast AJ Styles Show, the legend once again defended Avery, in addition to providing more information about the case.
"The promoter who was speaking, or at least he thought he was a promoter, was not the promoter of the event my son was in. He was there to set up the ring. He was paid to do that job with his team. I had never heard anything about this. The guy Avery was working with, Marcus Mathers, told me: 'We never heard anything. All we did was wrestle'. They drove from Missouri to Minnesota, slept in the car, and participated in the event. They never heard anything," AJ Styles said.
"Both of them tell me the exact same story," he continued. "I have never helped anyone, nor have I been asked to help them, when I have been paid to participate in an event and set up the ring for them. And certainly, no member of the ring crew has said anything to me. If you are unsure about whether you like Avery and see him at an event, approach him and talk to him. Decide for yourself."
"I have raised my children to be polite, grateful, and to appreciate things. I can promise you something: no one has been tougher on my kids than me. I don't beat around the bush or feel sorry for them, especially when it comes to wrestling, but I will protect their integrity. I think he's a pretty nice kid; at least that's what everyone who knows him and talks to him in person tells me. I'm not going to say they haven't acted like jerks with me or their mother, but that only lasts a moment, because I put them in their place right away," AJ said.
"Of course. He just says: 'I just want to wrestle and do these things'. There's no more time to dedicate to this. It shouldn't have escalated to the point it did. They should have been two people talking to each other like adults," AJ Styles said.
"After seeing what was being said on the Internet for a while, I thought: 'This guy is trying to make the kid look bad. Let me say something'. Maybe it wasn't the best. Maybe I should have kept quiet. I probably should have, but I couldn't help it. I'm a father and I will defend my son when someone else is wrong. Believe me, I checked all of this before saying anything."
