Maya World is living the most intense year of her professional career. At 24 years old, the Texan wrestler has had a great boost in All Elite Wrestling, going from being an occasional talent on television programming to becoming the TBS Champion. However, not everything has been perfect.
At the beginning of June, her brother (Jatwane Anton Wilson) lost his life in a traffic accident. That was a tough blow for Maya and her family, who had the full support of Tony Khan's company. Maya explained this in an interview for Poisonrana and POST Wrestling prior to AEW All In London.
"As soon as I arrived there, everyone was very affectionate and comforting with me. Tony has been incredible since that happened. They also provided me with all kinds of mental health resources, both for me and for my family, to whom they also offered their support. It's been amazing. I don't know if anywhere else would have treated me with as much affection as AEW has. It was definitely one of those situations where I had to dive in headfirst and keep busy. Since then I've been traveling and working every week, so it's been great," Maya stated.
World started working in AEW occasionally alongside her tag team partner Hyan. Both received a big push after filling in for Nixon Newell and Miranda Alize on an episode of AEW Collision last November after those talents refused to lose in a short match. All Elite Wrestling thanked World and Hyan for their help, which ultimately earned them a contract with the company.
The tragic death of Jatwane Anton led AEW to push Maya solo, allowing the wrestler to have a great role in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, where she reached the final after defeating the ROH World Champion (and one of her mentors) Athena. After that, World would surprise everyone again by winning the TBS Championship, her first gold in the company, which she currently holds around her waist.
