Athena will go down in history as one of the great figures of Ring of Honor of all time. "The Fallen Goddess" continues to expand her historic reign as the company's World Champion, which now totals an impressive 1,362 days. This figure makes her reign the longest in ROH history, including all titles in the company, both male and female. However, Athena is not satisfied yet.
Recently, the Texan became the longest-reigning champion of the modern era after surpassing the record set by Roman Reigns with the WWE Universal Championship. Now, "The Forever Champion" has a new goal in sight for Christmas, which is to surpass the record set by the legend Hulk Hogan in his longest reign of his career.
"I am the longest-reigning champion in the company's history. And not only that, a few weeks ago I became the longest-reigning champion of the modern era, both among men and women, so at this moment I am officially the champion with the longest reign," Athena said in an interview with WFAA.
"The champion with the longest reign of all time is Bruno Sammartino, which is absolutely phenomenal and a complete package, as most would say. But I think my next goal, which is very close, is Christmas, because then I will also surpass Hulk Hogan's longest reign," she continued. "So that is the goal right now, but the goal is to keep it forever because, you know, I guess I'm going to make a slightly cheesy pun. We're not talking about Bruno, no, no, no."
"Yes, as bad as the pun may be, it's really cool. And I think, after having that match with Hazuki (in ROH: Death Before Dishonor), I just want to travel the world. I want better competitors. I want more intense competition, not just in Ring of Honor. I want to defend my championship all over the world. We will soon go to Paris, so let's keep our fingers crossed for someone to step up and ask for a chance against The Forever Champion," she said.
"Yes, I am extremely grateful for everything I have been able to do throughout my career and for making history. Not only for headlining seven consecutive pay-per-views, but also for being the first woman to headline a pay-per-view under the AEW Ring of Honor banner of Tony Khan. So I am excited for whatever comes my way, because I know I will face it and come out victorious," she concluded.
Athena refers to Hulk Hogan's first reign as WWF World Heavyweight Champion, which set a record of 1,474 days. It is the third longest reign of the now-defunct championship, only behind the reigns of Bob Backlund (2,135 days) and Bruno Sanmartino (2,803 days). A figure she could reach in just over 100 days.
