The male division of WWE NXT has been significantly reinforced in recent weeks. The debut of Cruz Montana (Mike Santana in TNA Wrestling) was joined by the arrival of Zilla Fatu and the return of Grayson Waller to the developmental brand, the latter with the goal of "shaking things up". The three men competed in NXT Heatwave with the brand's top championship on the line, which ended up in the hands of the Australian.
Waller's coronation, while not an unexpected result, did surprise many fans, especially due to the presence of Fatu, who had been grabbing all the attention since his arrival to the brand. However, the decision to give the title to Grayson was made before the arrival of the Samoan. In fact, the idea was set in motion swiftly once his return to NXT was approved, as revealed in a recent report by WrestleVotes on Fightful Select.
"Once Shawn Michaels received confirmation that Waller would return to NXT for the foreseeable future, the idea was almost immediately to put the championship on him. As reported by WrestleVotes, there are several people within WWE who see great potential in Waller as one of the company's top heels," the outlet wrote.
"Regarding Tony D'Angelo, we have been informed that the title change does not reflect negatively on his work and should not be interpreted as a sign against him," the report continued. "Regarding D'Angelo's future, after consulting with several WWE sources related to the main roster, we have learned that his name has not been mentioned for a possible call-up to the main roster."
D'Angelo will compete in the next episode of NXT in a six-man tag team match. The members of the winning team will then face off in a triple threat match to determine Waller's first challenger. At the moment, the company has not revealed the date for the Australian's first title defense.
