That Sami Zayn snatched the WWE Championship from CM Punk apparently wasn't a decision that everyone behind the scenes was willing to commit to. Nevertheless, WWE carried out the title change, and the reason is tied to a story that is not supposed to make complete sense at this moment.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that Zayn's victory on September 11 was simply part of WWE's creative plans, and not the result of an injury or other issue involving Punk. The idea is that the reasoning behind the change will become clearer as the story unfolds.
"With Sami Zayn, the basic idea is that they have a story that will make sense when looked back upon, that's what I was told. When all is said and done, all of this will make sense," Meltzer explained.
That doesn't mean the decision was made without resistance. Meltzer added that there were people who didn't want to support the change, although the company decided to move forward regardless. According to the report, management is confident that, once the narrative reaches its conclusion, the audience will understand why this path was chosen.
In summary, the WWE title was passed to Zayn as part of a long-term creative design, even though not everyone in WWE was initially convinced that it was the right move at this time.
