Questions about drug controls in AEW have gained strength after Brian Cage openly spoke about his past with performance-enhancing substances and Lars Sullivan made a direct accusation against the company. Cage recently acknowledged that he has used PEDs (performance-enhancing drugs) during his career, although he rejected the idea that they were the sole factor behind his success in wrestling. He also stated that he has been on testosterone replacement therapy for a long time and defended that his physique is not as "enhanced" as some suggest.
On the other hand, Sullivan claimed on social media that AEW allows its wrestlers to abuse steroids, although he did not provide evidence and Cage did not clarify if the company approved or encouraged their use. During a Q&A on Fightful Select, Sean Ross Sapp addressed the issue and pointed out that no one from AEW he has spoken to has confirmed that they have undergone anti-doping controls.
Sapp also mentioned that he knows former AEW employees who used steroids and other drugs, although attempts to delve into those accusations were frustrated because the individuals involved did not want to put their names on the allegations. He added that he is not aware of recent steroid controls in either AEW or TNA Wrestling, although he clarified that this does not prove that either company lacks a testing process.
The use of PEDs (Performance-Enhancing Drugs), substances or drugs used to enhance physical, athletic, or cognitive performance, remains widespread in professional wrestling, with extreme physiques maintained by some wrestlers and common use of peptides. So far, AEW has not publicly explained in detail its steroid control policy in relation to this debate. Until the company does so, the controversy sparked by Cage's comments and Sullivan's accusation is likely to continue.
