Before the Continental Championship existed, AEW considered creating a title directly linked to Max (HBO), the streaming platform of Warner Bros. Discovery. Sean Ross Sapp, a journalist from Fightful, revealed this over the weekend in a Q&A from Fightful Select, explaining that the idea was circulating while negotiating to bring AEW PPVs to Max.
WBD approached AEW in mid-2023 and, although the agreement was not finalized until the fall of 2024, both parties believed they were very advanced. In that context, the possibility of launching a «MAX Championship» as part of the integration between the promotion and the platform was considered.
When Sapp asked Tony Khan, he clarified that the Continental was not simply the «MAX Championship» with another name, but the title he had always wanted to create. Sources from AEW and WBD confirmed that, once the Continental became a reality, the idea of the streaming-branded championship was discarded.
In the end, Max secured AEW programming and PPVs starting in 2025, while the Continental Championship remained as a title owned by the company, without needing to resemble a walking advertisement for the streaming service.
