John Cena’s retirement tour is entering its final stretch with just four months left, and while WWE has yet to set the exact date for his final match, the company may be planning a strategic move to go head-to-head with All Elite Wrestling.
On Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez reported that WWE is considering moving Cena’s last match to December 27, coinciding with AEW World’s End. The idea would be to hold it at Saturday Night’s Main Event from Boston, in a clear attempt to compete in viewership with Tony Khan’s company.
“Originally, John Cena’s final match was going to take place in early December at Saturday Night’s Main Event. This is not confirmed, but it seems there are discussions to move it so it’s the same night as AEW World’s End,” Alvarez explained. “I’ve been told they’re going to try to have Cena’s final match in Boston that day. We’ll see if it actually happens.”
This potential change comes after it was reported that WWE still has not finalized the complete schedule for Cena’s farewell tour. It wouldn’t be the first time the company has scheduled a major event against AEW, and it appears they could do it again to close the year with a direct showdown.
This week, we also reported on another strategic move by WWE to minimize the impact of All Elite Wrestling. While not yet confirmed, WWE is reportedly planning to hold a premium live event on September 20, headlined by a match between John Cena and Brock Lesnar, which would directly compete with the AEW All Out show.
