The recent acquisition of AAA by WWE is already making an impact. The changes in production and style inside the ring are evident, but now limitations that directly affect the wrestlers of the Mexican company are starting to appear.
According to Dave Meltzer in Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Nick Khan addressed the locker room before Triplemanía to clarify WWE's stance. In his speech, he assured that the company's intention is not to take over the product, but to help the wrestlers achieve greater global exposure and, consequently, increase their income: "WWE is not here to take over AAA. We are here to help you be seen worldwide and, ultimately, put more money in your pockets."
Although the message was received with some optimism, several wrestlers pointed out problems with the new contractual rules. While they will still be able to accept small bookings in Mexico, they will not be able to appear in independent shows in the United States, even in cities where they used to work and where they could earn up to twenty times more for a single night.
A couple of wrestlers commented afterwards that they were hopeful it was true, but pointed out that with the new restrictions in their contracts, they are allowed to take a small date in Mexico, although those same contracts do not allow them to accept a date in the United States on the same night, in a city where they used to work regularly and that would pay them 20 times more.
In practice, this means that Lucha Libre AAA talent maintains the freedom to appear at local events in Mexico, but loses the opportunity to work in the American independent circuit, which represents a significant source of income for many wrestlers.
For now, the locker room is observing the situation cautiously. Some hope that the promise of greater international visibility will eventually offset the immediate economic limitations. However, it is not clear whether these restrictions will end up causing discontent or if the wrestlers will choose to accept them as part of the company's new direction.
