WWE has revealed this afternoon the complete remaining schedule of John Cena's farewell tour, which includes a final appearance in Boston, the hometown of the seventeen-time world champion. However, this will not be the chosen setting for "The Greatest of All Time's" retirement match. Several sources point to Washington D.C. as the city where the legend will hang up his boots for good.
From the beginning, WWE made a strong bet on this final match, offering several cities the opportunity to host the event. However, despite Boston officials' efforts to secure it, they were unable to do so. This was explained by journalist Jon Alba in a recent statement on X.
"WWE has been trying to promote John Cena's final match as a destination weekend, with other events scheduled around the taping of Saturday Night's Main Event. This would include, according to bidding documents from earlier this year, events such as a solo show by The Undertaker," Alba said.
"Boston really wanted his final match, and I know firsthand that the executives made a very strong effort to get it. WWE and TKO want Cena's final match to be a major tourist event. Achieving that in December, in Boston and during the holiday season, is not easy," Alba added.
"The NBA Cup was at stake, but WWE had framed this as a bidding process from the start. Earlier this year, they sent documents to several cities and wanted to reserve entire weekends for the festivities surrounding Cena. Boston went all in for it. But it didn't work out," he continued.
"Boston officials were very upset with the way WWE communicated the bidding process to them, as well as with some of the demands, especially compared to previous events held in the city," Alba explained.
Despite everything, Boston will be able to properly bid farewell to Cena when he makes his penultimate appearance on WWE Raw. The show will take place on November 10, two weeks before Survivor Series, the legend's last PPV appearance before his retirement at Saturday Night's Main Event.
