Since his retirement from wrestling in 2020, The Undertaker has adopted a new persona, leaving behind his classic attire and TV personality to show his true self, that of Mark William Calaway. He has done several interviews since then, and in each statement he makes, we can learn a little more about his career and his vision of the business.
In this case, the former WWE Champion stopped by the Nightcap channel for a new interview and to address some very interesting topics. One of the big headlines he left was stating very emphatically that in wrestling, telling a good story is much more important than performing spectacular moves. “Wrestling is not about wrestling moves. Wrestling is about telling stories. We use moves to help tell the story, but it's all about the connection”, he commented.
He also argued that in this business, success or failure depends on simpler factors: "If you love someone, you pay money to see them kick the other guy's ass, or if you hate them, you pay to see them get beat up. That's essentially what we do".
Undertaker also spoke about how WWE's talent recruitment system has changed in recent times. In addition to focusing on wrestlers from other companies and the independent scenes, they have also put a lot of effort into working with college athletes, many of whom have no experience in wrestling. “We recruit at the combine, go to universities, to pro days... because we have to keep feeding the system. When I started, you either had it or you didn't. Now we get people from scratch who don't understand the business, so we have to break it all down", he reflected.
During the interview, Deadman was also asked about the figure of Bray Wyatt. His response was very clear: no one had captured the dark mystique of the Undertaker as much as Wyatt. "He was at the Undertakeresque level", Calaway concluded.
