The special episode of NXT Homecoming left an unexpected surprise in the form of an announcement: Trick Williams and Oba Femi will face off in a "title vs. title" match, which means the winner will hold both the NXT Championship and the TNA World Championship.
This move could have consequences for both brands. Both Femi and Williams already had their upcoming title defenses scheduled. "The Ruler" was set to defend the NXT Championship against Ricky Saints at No Mercy. Trick's case is more complex, as the wrestler was supposed to defend his title against Mike Santana at the TNA Bound For Glory event, with Santana trying to reclaim the top prize for Anthem Media's company.
Of course, the news did not sit well with the TNA Wrestling talent, who quickly took to social media to express their discontent. Their reaction was discussed on the NXT show and will set the stage for what is to come. As Mike Johnson from PWInsider explained, revealing what could happen next Tuesday.
"Last week, when Trick Williams agreed to put his TNA title on the line against Oba Femi's WWE NXT Championship, several TNA talents expressed their displeasure on social media and said it was time for the company to do something about it," Johnson wrote.
"That 'something' will likely happen on this Tuesday's WWE NXT episode," he continued. "NXT sources have confirmed that TNA talents are being scheduled to appear next week, and currently between 2 and 4 wrestlers are expected to show up."
Many fans have pointed out that the current WWE/NXT and TNA alliance has mostly favored the former. The holding of the top championships of Anthem Media's company by NXT talents has only angered TNA fans even more, as well as the talent themselves. With everything that has happened, many are anticipating an "invasion" or a "brand war," which could be on the horizon.
